How To Downgrade iOS 7 To iOS 6 Using iFaith

There have been a ton of people who have updated their iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad to iOS 7 and wished they could have downgraded back to iOS 6. But unfortunately it is impossible right? Well this may not be the case for iPhone 4 owners who managed to save their SHSH blobs on iOS 6, specifically on iOS 6.1.3 or 6.1.2.

Due to the fact that a bootrom exploit is present on the iPhone 4 that leaves it Jailbroken for life, it also means that it can be downgraded for life as long as you have saved SHSH blobs. So if you have an iPhone 4 that is running any variant of iOS 7 and you would like to go back to iOS 6.1.3 or 6.1.2 (or any iOS 6 firmware you have saved SHSH blobs for) you will be glad to know it is indeed possible and in this tutorial we will show you how to downgrade.

Unfortunately this leaves a lot of people in the dark, however, but that is the reality of the situation. Only iPhone 4 owners with saved SHSH blobs with a Windows computer will be able to take advantage of this specific downgrade.

How To Downgrade iOS 7 To iOS 6

Step 1) - The first thing you will need to do is ensure you are running iTunes 11.0.5 or below. If you are on a newer version of iTunes like 11.1.x then you will need to uninstall it from your computer and re-install an older version. This is because newer versions of iTunes actually kill the ability to restore to custom firmware files. One last thing to keep in mind is when uninstalling make sure you remove all traces,  including services like Apple Mobile Device, Apple Software Update and Bonjour.

Once you uninstall iTunes and all of the related services, restart your computer and then download iTunes 11.0.5 from here. When it downloads install it. If you encounter an error that has to do with “iTunes Music Library.xml”, head over to your iTunes Music folder and delete said file.

Step 2) - Now it is time to grab the latest version of iFaith and of course either the iOS 6.1.3 firmware or 6.1.2 firmware from the iJailbreak Downloads Section. Lastly you will need to acquire your SHSH blobs from wherever you saved them locally. Those who saved them on Cydia will need to make use of the  “Show Available SHSH Caches on Server” option in iFaith to save them on your desktop now.

Step 3) - Ensure iFaith is up and running if it isn’t already and click the ”*signed* IPSW w / Blobs”. This will begin the custom firmware creation process where you will need to select your SHSH blobs and then iFaith will work its magic and create a downgradable iOS 6 firmware file for your iPhone 4.

Step 4) - Once it has been created follow the on-screen instructions for putting your device into Pwned DFU mode. When your iPhone 4 enters Pwned DFU mode launch iTunes, select your iPhone, Shift click the restore button and select the custom firmware iFaith created.

After the restore is complete you will have successfully downgraded your iPhone 4 from iOS 7 to iOS 6.1.3 or 6.1.2.

The PlayStation 4  Jailbroken, Here’s How Can Do It.

Roughly a week after the release of the PlasyStation 4 and it looks like it already could have been Jailbroken by a hacker who goes by the alias of Reckz0r. The news comes from Playzon who shared Reckz0r’s playzon PasteBin file that essentially explains the whole process in a step-by-step format.

The Jailbreak could allow for pirated games, customizations of the UI of the PlayStation and just about anything else hackers can do with root access.

Reckz0r shouldn’t be credited with developing the Jailbreak in its entirety, however, he says he did not find the vulnerability in the PlayStation 4 himself or create the exploit. Instead he credits a Brazilian console-hacking forum. What he did do though is provide clear instructions on how anyone can Jailbreak their PlayStation 4.

As you all know, PS4 runs Orbis OS, that is highly based on FreeBSD (which is a opensource operating system), and as the PS4 is closely identical to a PC, I guess you all knew that PS4 and the Xbox One will probably end up getting pawned soon, and now..its time.

Not many people have been able to verify whether this Jailbreak is 100% legit simply due to the fact not many people own the console yet, but some success has been reported.

Of course if you would like to Jailbreak your PlaySation 4 you better do it fast because Sony has been known to shut things down fast. In fact, Reckz0r already posted a screenshot of a proposed conversation he had with the official PlayStation Twitter account, via direct message.

3. Extract the PSORBISEXP.PUP file from the package, and save it in the EXP folder.

4. Make sure your PlayStation 4 is turned off.

5. Connect the USB storage device to your PlayStation 4, and press the power button for at least 7 seconds. The PlayStation 4 will start in Safe Mode.

6. Select “Update System Software.”

7. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the jailbreak.

8. If your PlayStation 4 doesn’t recognize the jailbreaking file, make sure that the folder and file names are correct.

9. Voila! JAILBROKEN!

TinyUmbrella Updated To Version 6.10.03 To Support iOS 6.1.1, NotCom Working On A Cydia Tweak

TinyUmbrella has been updated today to version 6.10.03 for the release of the iOS 6.1.1 firmware that Apple pushed to the iPhone 4S. If you have an iPhone 4S and you upgraded it to iOS 6.1.1 you should without a doubt Download the latest version of TinyUmbrella and save yourSHSH blobs as soon as possible.

I have said this many times, but I am going to repeat myself. Although the usefulness of saving your SHSH blobs is becoming less and less, the possibility that a new exploit could be found to once again re-open downgrading is pretty high. It is better to save your SHSH blobs in case you accidentally update to a new firmware version and a downgrading solution is found requiring them, rather than missing out on the downgrade because you were too lazy to save your SHSH blobs. Furthermore, saving your SHSH blobs allows you to re-restore to the same firmware version you are currently running, when Apple stops signing it.

Among other things NotCom has said he is still working on the mythical rewrite of Tiny Umbrella and also a Cydia tweak (we will keep you posted on that). You can check out the official post for yourself below…

Absinthe is the successor to the GreenPois0n Jailbreaking tool and was developed in collaboration between many developers in the Jailbreaking community; including the iPhone Dev-Team, Chronic Dev-Team and Pod2G. The Basics Of Absinthe

Absinthe is a Jailbreaking tool where you do not lose any data on your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Apple TV after Jailbreaking. This is because Absinthe does not erase any data during the Jailbreaking process. Some Jailbreaking tools like The PwnageTool require you to restore your device to complete the Jailbreaking process. This results in all the data on your device being erased. Although this method of Jailbreaking has its advantages, it is inconvenient to lose all your data and thus Absinthe is ideal for those who do not fancy having to backup everything on their device.

On Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, because of the new Gatekeeper software, there is also a trick to running Absinthe. You will need to first hold down the control button and then select the ‘open’ option.

How To Jailbreak With Absinthe

As Absinthe is a one-click Jailbreaking solution, it is an extremely easy process to go about Jailbreaking your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. iJailbreak has written numerous guides for Jailbreaking your iOS device with Absinthe that can be accessed from the How To Jailbreak Section. These guides include screenshots, and are specific to each firmware version Absinthe supports. As the Jailbreaking process with Absinthe is essentially the same for all firmware versions however, you can follow the generalized guide below as well.

Note: It is recommended, at the minimum, that before you start following this guide you should backup your iOS device. Better yet restoring your device to factory settings through iTunes has shown to reduce the chances of encountering an error while using Absinthe to Jailbreak your device.

1. The first thing you will need to do is download Absinthe. As mentioned previously this can be done from the iJailbreak Downloads Section.
2. Next you will need to plug your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Apple TV into your computer via USB. Once you have done this launch Absinthe; keeping in mind the points discussed previously on how to launch Absinthe correctly on both Mac OS X and Windows.
3. Once you launch Absinthe, the tool should recognize your device, and once this happens, you will need to click the Jailbreak button in the middle-right side of the screen. When you click the Jailbreak button your iOS device will look like it is being officially restored through iTunes; it should say something along the lines of “restore in progress.” Keep in mind that the Jailbreaking process can take anywhere from 5-20 minutes depending on if you restored your device or not prior to Jailbreaking it.
4. After the Jailbreaking process is complete you should see a new Absinthe icon (only if you are Jailbreaking iOS 5.0.1 or 5.0). Tap on this icon now and then your device should reboot automatically, and instead of the Absinthe icon you should see a Cydia icon on your home screen. Congratulations! As long as you see Cydia on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad then your device is Jailbroken (You will not see a Cydia icon when Jailbreaking the Apple TV because it is not compatible with it).

Apple Releases iOS 6.1 Beta 5, With Software

Out of nowhere and on a Saturday, Apple has gone ahead and released a new iOS 6.1 Beta to developers. The iOS 6.1 beta 5 was released just hours before the 4th beta was about to expire. A lot of developers were expecting Apple to release the iOS 6.1 GM by now, so this release is actually quite a weird one.

Apple doesn’t usually seed a 5th beta for a smaller iOS update, so this is disappointing as it will surely delay the release of iOS 6.1 jailbreak. Jailbreakers are only waiting for Apple to push the public iOS 6.1 update so they can release the jailbreak for iPhone 5. However, hackers and important jailbreak personalities have noted on Twitter that iOS 6.1 beta 5 could actually be released as a public version.

                                 

Perhaps Apple will release iOS 6.1 to the public without releasing a GM first. It wouldn’t be the first time, as the company has done something like this before. If you’re a developer, download the latest beta and try it out. We’re not sure when iOS 6.1 beta 5 is set to expire. Maybe it is the GM we’ve been waiting for, only Apple doesn’t want us to know.

How The Game Center Could Look Like In iOS 7 

Last year we shared with you a mockup from a Cult Of Mac reader by the name of Adrian Maciburko who redesigned the iOS Notes application with a “Crystal Interface.” The inspiration came from Scott Forstall, the man responsible for much of the visual design of Apple’s iOS, leaving Apple and Jony Ive taking over his iOS design roles. If you know anything about Ive it is that he is not a fan of skeuomorphism; the idea of making the OS elements look like real world materials and mechanisms.

Maciburko has now took to redesigning the iOS Game Center with his “Crystal Interface” and it actually looks pretty good. He has gotten rid of a lot of user interface elements that are unnecessary and really simplified the design.

Some time ago I started to explore a crystal interface concept for iOS 7. I initially looked at the iOS notes app. Another app that I explored and applied the crystal interface concept to recently is the game center app. I believe thegame center app would benefit by changing to a slide out nav instead of the tab bar. The reason for this is that “Me tab” and “Friend requests tab” have a lower frequency of use, unlike in say the app store app where you move between featured, updates, top charts and search frequently when using the app, so in that case the tab bar makes sense.

I have also looked at placing more focus on achievements for different games. I am not sure that knowing that you are no. 11,740,241 of 11,988,582 is a necessary stat at this list view level and also creates extra noise.

While some of you may not be a fan Maciburko “Crystal Interface” I do hope the Ive makes iOS interface elements a little bit cleaner. Moreso, I hope a lot of the stock apps like weatherget a complete redesign, as why would someone want to use the stock weather app when there is beautifully designed 3rd party ones?

One of the benefits of PwnageTool is that it allows for greater Jailbreak customization. This is because unlike tools like RedSn0w or GreenPois0n that Jailbreak your device in its current state, PwnageTool creates a custom iOS firmware file (IPSW) that will need to be restored to your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Apple TV before it will become Jailbroken. This is has its pros and cons, with the biggest con being that you will lose all the data on your iOS device.

The PwnageTool is only compatible with Mac OS X, but a Windows version is available and it is called Sn0wBreeze. Both tools are essentially clones, but are maintained by different developers.

The difference between a Tethered and Untethered Jailbreak

Due to the fact that PwnageTool supports a wide variety of firmware versions, it will Jailbreakboth Tethered and Untethered. This is because not all firmware versions are able to be Jailbroken Untethered. An Untethered Jailbreak means that your device will function as normal once Jailbroken. A Tethered Jailbreak on the other hand is different. It means that when you Jailbreak you cannot power your device off. When you do this while your Jailbreakis Tethered it means in order for your device to turn back on you will need to plug it into the computer and re-run RedSn0w over again. Once you do this your device functions as normal… no data is lost. Hence the term tethered, because you are Tethered to your computer.

Now why would a Jailbreak be Tethered? Well the only reason a Jailbreak would be Tethered is if the developers behind the Jailbreak for a specific firmware version are having a hard time Jailbreaking it. If this is the case often times they will release a Tethered Jailbreak and then an Untethered Jailbreak later on once they find a suitable exploit.

How to launch PwnageTool correctly

If you are running The PwnageTool on OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion then you will need to launch The PwnageTool a certain way to get past the new Gatekeeper security mechanism. In order to launch PwnageTool you will need hold down the control button on your keyboard and click on the Open option.

Navigating Around PwnageTool

Upon launching the PwnageTool you will come to a screen where you will need to select the iOS device you are trying to Jailbreak. If you look towards the top of the screen however, you will see four buttons – Simple Mode, Expert Mode,Log and DFU. Simple Mode is activated by default and will not show you any Jailbreak customization options, Expert Mode will show you options to customize your Jailbreak, Log will show another window beneath the PwnageTool that can help you debug if you experience any errors and DFU will present to you instructions for entering DFU mode.

The PwnageTool is a Jailbreaking tool that should be used by advanced users who who don’t mind restoring their iOS device.
